    Mi sono recato a Pechino per una conferenza di settore e gli organizzatori hanno prenotato il mio soggiorno presso il Friendship Hotel VIP Building Beijing. Ne conoscevo la fama di "più grande hotel in stile giardino dell'Asia", ma non appena ho varcato l'ingresso principale, ho compreso appieno la grandiosità dello stile della "Vecchia Pechino": un rifugio di serenità nel cuore del frenetico contesto urbano.
    Svoltando dall'incrocio del ponte Si-tong e percorrendo un viale alberato adornato di lanterne rosse, tra il fogliame iniziarono a scorgersi edifici in stile cinese, caratterizzati da tetti con tegole verdi e gronde ricurve verso l'alto. Era difficile immaginare che, proprio alle spalle del traffico intenso e del fermento commerciale di Zhongguancun, si celasse una vasta tenuta con giardini estesi per 220.000 metri quadrati.     Ciò che ho trovato più difficile abbandonare sono stati i momenti trascorsi a passeggiare nella tenuta. Gli edifici, con le loro tegole verdi smaltate, erano disposti simmetricamente lungo un asse centrale, con travi e gronde finemente decorate che riposavano all'ombra di alberi imponenti e secolari; i giardini, punteggiati di padiglioni e terrazze, offrivano scorci pittoreschi e sempre nuovi a ogni passo. La colazione è autentica e sostanziosa: il budino di tofu preparato al momento sprigiona un ricco aroma di nocciola, mentre i *jiaoquan* (anelli di pasta fritta croccante) e i *tang'erduo* (dolci glassati allo zucchero a forma di orecchio) offrono i sapori genuini della vecchia Pechino. Non c'è bisogno di avventurarsi negli *hutong* alla ricerca di spuntini: è possibile assaggiarli tutti proprio qui, nel ristorante dell'hotel.
    Dopo una riunione protrattasi fino a tardi, sulla via del ritorno in hotel ho fatto una piccola deviazione per percorrere l'antico corridoio coperto del complesso. Calde luci gialle fiancheggiavano il cammino, proiettando le ombre degli alberi sulle pareti rosse: una scena che evocava le atmosfere del cinema classico della vecchia Pechino. Ricordavo di aver letto che questo luogo ospitava originariamente la Xijiao Guesthouse, costruita nel 1954 e utilizzata per vent'anni consecutivi come residenza per i delegati delle "Due Sessioni" (gli incontri legislativi e consultivi nazionali). Innumerevoli personalità di spicco avevano percorso quel medesimo sentiero di pietra su cui camminavo io; eppure, eccomi lì a passeggiare in tutta tranquillità nel presente. Quel profondo senso della storia — che abbraccia decenni — è qualcosa che nessun hotel alla moda o "virale" potrebbe mai offrire.
    Un tempo pensavo che soggiornare a Pechino significasse scegliere, per comodità, un hotel moderno vicino a un quartiere commerciale. Tuttavia, dopo aver soggiornato presso Friendship Hotel VIP Building Beijing, ho capito che alloggiare all'interno di un giardino storico — incastonato nel vivace centro città — e riposare comodamente tra architetture antiche dai caratteristici tetti con le gronde ricurve verso l'alto, regala un'esperienza di Pechino molto più autentica e memorabile.
