A year after the border reopened, costa Rica has seen a recovery in tourist arrivals

Date: 2021-08-19

Costa Rica's Tourism board recently announced that since the border reopened in early August 2020 through July this year, the number of inbound tourists has recovered compared to the period from August 2019 to July 2020.

A total of 766,303 tourists visited Costa Rica in July this year after the border reopened in early August 2020, according to figures recently released by the Costa Rican Tourism Bureau, el Pais reported. The number of inbound tourists has recovered since the reopening of the border, compared to data from August 2019 to July 2020.

Data showed that July was the most visited month since the reopening of the country, with 146,915 visitors. In terms of countries of origin, the United States was the main source of tourists to Costa Rica with 549,752 visitors.

Despite the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, Costa Rica is one of the few countries in the world where all U.S. airlines have resumed flights, the tourism board stressed.

Costa Rica's tourism minister, Gustavo Segura, stressed: "We still have a long way to go and we must open up tourism to the world in the most appropriate way, always taking into account the health and safety of the people. At the same time, we must protect the environment in order to achieve sustainable development."
